The Jack Petchey Speak Out Challenge

Rafi Sandford

The Jack Petchey Speak Out Challenge, arguably a highlight of the Year 10 Hasmonean English calendar, was held in Whitefield School and featured students from all over Barnet. It was judged by a panel of experts from the communication and public speaking fields, including representatives from local government and BAFTA. Rafi Sandford’s practiced and skilful speech, demonstrated that he has a real flair for public speaking and it was clear that the audience and judges were impressed with his presentation. Performing an inspirational and uplifting speech about the universal language of music, Rafi put his busking skills to the test and had the audience, including several members of the Boys’ English Department, eating out the palm of his hand and on the edge of their seats, enthralled with his expert use of the English language. Rafi was supported by his friends and family and he made Hasmonean proud with his confidence and poise. Rafi has shown that public speaking is a real opportunity for our students to share their voices with the world and it was clear from the screams and cheers from the audience, that his performance will inspire other young people to Speak Out! We thank Rafi for his music, for giving it to us!

AJEX Parade – Sunday 20th November 2022

Dear All

Thank you so much to the staff who assisted on Friday for our Wear Red and Remembrance Assemblies and particularly those who joined me at Horse Guards and by the Cenotaph on Sunday in the cold and then the rain.

It was the 80th year of the parade and although there are few veterans left from the Second World War it was a valuable opportunity to thank all those who have risked their lives and in many cases lost their lives to defend our freedoms. There are currently 400-500 serving Jewish men and women who serve in a variety of roles. One of them is Staff Sergeant Dan Fox, the Chair of AJEX who spoke at the Boys’ School on Friday.

Travelling home with my eight-year old son, we met a retired couple who take part every year. The gentleman told me that his medals were earned by his father who was killed in action in the Second World War when he was only 20. This gentleman was a baby at the time and his mother was left a very young widow.

Attached are some photographs of our students. Abigail (Yr7) and Yonatan (Yr9) held the banners and Jodie (Yr13) laid poppies at the cenotaph. Leya (Yr10) attended the pre parade reception where we were addressed by Chief Rabbi Mirvis and the President of the Board of Deputies.  You will notice Alyssa Teper (ex Hasmonean student) in the photos who is now in the police force so was on duty yesterday.

We will remember them.

Maccabiah Games

THE MACCABIAH GAMES

Three of our Year 10 girls have the most amazing opportunity this summer. They have been selected to represent Team GB in the U18s Girls Football at the Maccabiah Games which start in Israel this week. They will face Argentina, Australia, Canada, Israel, Mexico and the USA before hopefully going on to win Gold! Jessie Y, Dalia F and Mia W are all fabulously talented young women who will be superb ambassadors for Hasmonean as well as enjoying a really special experience. We wish them every success in their sporting efforts.

Jack Petchey Award Winners

‘If you think you can, you can’ is the motto of the Jack Petchey Foundation and a group of our girls embodied this as they collected their award from the Mayor of Barnet, Councillor Alison Moore.

On Monday, 27th June, the Jack Petchey Foundation had their Awards Ceremony at the Arts Depot in North Finchley.

The evening began with an address by the Mayor of Barnet, who spoke about the humble beginnings of Sir Jack. Since the inception of the scheme in 1999, it has raised millions of pounds for schools and youth organisations in London.  She spoke about the need to strive for a purpose.

Avigail R, Ariella G, Shani J and Shira L attended the event and were awarded medallions for their services to our School and the wider community. These girls embody Torah im Derech Eretz. They have such a positive attitude to life.

We are extremely proud of all our award winners!

Visit from Mr Michael McCann

The Boys’ School were privileged to host Mr Michael McCann, former MP of the Labour Party today. Mr McCann told us about life as a politician and reminded us how important the State of Israel is as a home to the Jewish people. Thanks to Eitan and Moshe for organising.

Beyond The Label

Two of Hasmonean’s Year 12 students, Adina R and Shira G, joined forces with GIFT to create a wonderful evening celebrating women and diversity. The concept of the show was their GIFT Midrasha class project.

Called “Beyond the Label”, it showcased a very diverse range of nineteen models from the community. Students, Kisharon clients and women with different abilities confidently strutted down the cat walk to a range of songs which asserted their style, such as Lady Gaga’s ‘Born this Way’.

Three very inspirational women spoke: Alexia Baron who created the clothing range Porto&Bello – when diagnosed with breast cancer in the middle of a pandemic, she noticed that there was nothing which was comfortable and dignified to wear while having treatment.  Suzy Simons, who lost her sight and began a charity for the sight impaired to have support, spoke about her experiences. Finally, Debbie Rosten, who was ‘short and to the point’ emphasised that we all have to look beyond the label.

Thank you to Kinloss who provided the venue, to Valour who helped and inspired, as well as to House of Lancry, The Wardrobe, Fame and Alona Karen for dressing these wonderful women. Thank you also to all the wonderful women who did the hair and makeup, bringing all these fantastic looks together.

The event ran smoothly and slickly, giving time for the many attendees to mingle and enjoy an evening out. To see pictures and highlights of the night please check out @giftcharity on Instagram.
